PCS Introduces Larger Dryer Sizes

PCS is pleased to announce the development of larger dryers that are similar to multiple-nozzle spray dryers. Until now, PCS had been limited to dryer evaporation rates of 1,500 pounds per hour of water evaporation. With the development of the duct-fired process air heating, the company is able to mount multiple nozzles on a single drying chamber and thereby increase the evaporative capacity to at least 5,000 pounds per hour.

PCS Introduces Three New Options for Atomization and Drying

In addition to our traditional pulse combustor and atomizer combination, PCS now offers three new ways to heat the atomizing and drying air. These are:

Electric. In Electric Mode, the atomizing and drying air is heated directly by passing it over electric heating elements. A process blower pressurizes the air up to about 4 psi, and pushes it through the heater. The atomizing and drying effect is almost identical to that achieved when using our traditional pulse combustor. The advantages are:
a. Zero emissions from burning of fuel
b. Zero nitrates in powder
c. Equivalent or better powder quality
d. Easiest of all Pulse Atomizing Dryers to operate
e. Very low maintenance costs.
Duct Heater. In Duct Heater Mode, the atomizing and drying air is heated directly by passing it through a duct having a natural gas burner. As with the electric mode, a process blower pressurizes the air up to about 4 psi, and pushes it through the heater. The atomizing and drying effect is almost identical to that achieved when using our traditional pulse combustor. The advantages of the Duct Heater are:
a. Equivalent powder quality
b. Equivalent thermal efficiency
c. Second-easiest of all Pulse Atomizing Dryers to operate
d. Very low maintenance costs.The Duct Heater is also available in a Low NOx configuration.
Indirect Gas-Fired Heater. In this configuration, the Duct Heater is replaced by a gas-fired heat exchanger, enabling the process air to be free of products of combustion. This type of air heating is commonly used in the dairy industry. This system is also available in a Low NOx mode.

PCS has Acquired a CILAS 990LD Particle Size Analyzer

Payson, Arizona – Pulse Combustion Systems (PCS) has acquired a CILAS 990LD Particle Size Analyzer, and now offers on-site particle size analysis for Pilot Trial and Toll Drying customers.

The CILAS 990LD is a single laser high resolution analyzer designed to provide the highest level of performance and reliability. 990LD is configured and optimized for the analysis of liquid samples with particle sizes ranging from 0.2 – 500 μm and 0.3 to 500 microns for dry samples. This system incorporates a single 830 nm laser with a total power of 3 mW.

PCS’s “Plug and Play” Dryer Installed and Operating Smoothly

Payson, Arizona – Pulse Combustion Systems (PCS) today provided an update on its first “Plug and Play” pulse atomization spray dryer. The dryer was commissioned at PCS’s factory in Payson, Arizona last summer, and was trucked to the manufacturing facilities of Tecsiquim SA of Mexico City. Because the dryer was completely modular, it was simple and fast to set up and to put into production. Tecsiquim has reported that the PCS dryer is running as expected, and the company has already begun drying a second product in the dryer.

“We called the customer to follow up on how things are going.” said James A. Rehkopf, President of Pulse Combustion Systems. “We were very pleased to learn that there were no problems with the dryer, and that they had already started drying new feed materials. This is impressive, and is a testament to the skill and capabilities of Tecsiquim managers and engineers.”

PCS Sells Combustor For Innovative Application

Payson, Arizona – Pulse Combustion Systems (PCS) shipped a custom-designed pulse combustor to a new customer today.

Instead of using it for spray drying, the customer is going to use it as a novel heat source in a gasification project.

“We were very pleased to receive this order, because the requirement for high temperatures, high velocities, and high heat release perfectly fits the capabilities of our advanced-technology pulse combustor,” said James Rehkopf, President of Pulse Combustion Systems. “We enjoy working with high-tech, innovative customers, and we look forward to the results from this new application of our technology.”

The customer plans to start up the gasifier in the next few months, and should be reporting results shortly thereafter.
